More VT & my own soapbox

As for the many culprits behind the VA Tech shooting, I tend to agree most with this one.

School “disciplinary systems” are a joke. While an undergraduate, A. was tried and convicted at the student court at Northwestern for abusing his girlfriend. He was sentenced to therapy, which did no good. Now he has a professorship there. Even when women stand up for themselves, even when they do press charges, it does no good.

It’s hard to cope with things that don’t make sense. But not everything can be traced back to simple causes or some metanarrative of good v. evil. Things happen that are outside our control, that we don’t deserve, that we can’t fix or revenge or even understand.

And now for some Stephen Crane:

A man said to the universe:
“Sir I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
“The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.”

I agree that the way schools deal with these issues is horrible. When I was at UCLA, I had a peeping tom—and I called the police 3 times (the UCLA police did nothing to help me). I had to chase the guy off—which was stupid and dangerous. The police said that there was nothing they could do unless they caught him in the act. It was a horrible situation that only got resolved when I got a 110 pound dog to protect me. That was my experience and I’m sure there are a million similar ones out there.
