Emmett Williams’ sweethearts (1966) is a very cool but impossible to find book. Marcel Duchamp liked it so much he authorized a reproduction of Coeurs Volants on the book’s cover — that’s pretty high praise!
whoa– that’s pretty awesome! i wonder if i could put it online through OV… do you have a xerox? maybe the PRB has it.
Sorry, I don’t have a xerox. And what’s PRB?
If I remember right — it has been several years since I saw a copy — the text uses only the letters of the word “sweethearts” and to be read back to front.
A true story: as a result of some Coeurs Volants madness around here right before Valentine’s Day, I searched out what appeared to be the only copy of Sweethearts offered for sale on-line, and bought it. The book should be delivered any day now.
I was stunned just a few days later to read of Williams’ death.
Another really good Williams work is the poem “resolutions,” found at pages 12-17 of the 1967 Great Bear Pamphlet.
This one is available on-line (at ubu.com), and is especially fun for all us who tend to have New Year’s resolutions that morph. Here’s the URL but probably it’s too long for the comment box:
